"Should we cover this roller in rubber or polyurethane?" is one of the questions we hear most. The right answer depends on the application: contact chemicals, line speed, nip load and temperature can each flip the decision. Here is a criterion-by-criterion comparison.
The Character of Each Material
Rubber is not a single material: Natural rubber (NR), Nitrile (NBR), EPDM, Hypalon (CSM), Silicone and Ebonite each answer different needs, with wide formulation flexibility and access to very soft grades. Polyurethane (PU) is cast in place; it leads all elastomers in abrasion and cut resistance and keeps its shape under heavy load.
Comparison on Six Criteria
Abrasion: PU wins clearly — 3-5x the life of rubber in abrasive service is common. Cut and tear: PU is preferred on lines carrying sharp-edged product. Chemicals: NBR and PU handle oils and solvents; EPDM and Ebonite excel in acid/alkali service. Temperature: Silicone survives up to +200°C, while PU is practically limited to +80°C. Non-marking: Both families offer light-coloured non-marking formulations. Cost: Rubber usually wins on first cost; PU often wins on total cost of ownership thanks to service life.
Our Recommendations by Industry
Textile (sizing, dyeing, bleaching): EPDM or Ebonite depending on chemical load; combine with PTFE coating where release is needed. Steel and heavy industry: 80-95 Shore A polyurethane for load and wear. Printing and packaging: NBR for solvent contact; PU for delicate print surfaces. Food: Food-grade silicone, EPDM or PU compounds.
Five Questions Before You Decide
1) Which chemicals does the roller touch? 2) What is the continuous operating temperature? 3) How high are line speed and nip load? 4) Is surface marking tolerable? 5) How did the previous covering fail — wear, debonding or cracking? These five answers usually pin down material and hardness in one pass. Because we apply both rubber and polyurethane in-house, our advice is material-neutral.
